MEDICATION SHORTAGE

A new National Patient Safety Alert has been issued by NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care to address supply issues with some Diabetes medications.

The shortages are having a global impact including across the UK. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales

Which drugs are impacted by the shortage?

The current shortages are impacting on supplies of Ozempic, Trulicity, Victoza, Saxenda, Byetta, and Bydureon.

These shortages mean that some people may need to change to a different medication or management plan.

Your healthcare team may contact you discuss the options with you.

You may be offered a diabetes review sooner than your next planned appointment. If your medication changes and you need support, ask your healthcare team about structured education and whether a referral to diabetes remission or weight management programme might be suitable for you.

If this shortage is impacting on your mental health and wellbeing, you can call the Diabetes UK Helpline – call 0345 123 2399.

Partners in Care

Once registered, patients and healthcare professionals work together to ensure the most appropriate care is provided. This partnership philosophy extends even further and our active patient group exists to make sure that patient needs and the practice offering are always heading in the same direction.

Access

The surgery is accessible to patients using a wheelchair, and there are no untoward inclines or awkward corners to negotiate. We also have several dedicated parking spaces reserved for patients displaying a disabled badge. There is a bell at the surgery entrance for those patients who require assistance with access, and we have a lift to enable movement between floors.

Parking is only available to patients while attending the surgery for legitimate reasons (attending for an appointment, collecting medication, etc.) and we do make regular checks of the car park to prevent misuse.

Please don’t forget there are many services available for you, depending on your condition. These include:

· Self-care – This is the best choice to treat minor illnesses and injuries such as hangovers, coughs, colds, grazes, small cuts, or sore throats. Many of these can be treated at home, simply with over-the-counter medicines and plenty of rest. For more information visit: www.nhs.uk

· Pharmacy – Pharmacists can give advice on and treat a range of symptoms. They can support you with things such as diarrhoea, earaches, painful coughs, sticky eyes, teething and rashes. To find your nearest pharmacy call 111 or visit www.nhs.uk

· NHS 111 – You can access 111 online or via the telephone. This is for any urgent but non-life threatening health concerns. They will be able to signpost you to the relevant service and provide advice where appropriate, or book you into an Urgent Treatment Centre.

· A&E / 999 – You should only attend A&E or dial 999 in a life-threatening emergency such as severe bleeding, breathing difficulties and severe chest pain.

We also ask that you show our staff respect and patience at all times. We are here to help you, and are trying to do that in the best possible way. Please do not shout or swear at our staff who may not be able to give you the answer you were hoping for. They do not deserve to be treated in this way and this behaviour will not be tolerated. Patients who repeatedly rude, abusive or aggressive towards or staff will be removed from our practice and have to register with another GP practice locally.

Thank you
