Right to choose pathway for ADHD and ASD diagnosis:

If you are based in England under the NHS you now have a legal right to choose your mental healthcare provider this includes referrals relating to Autism and ADHD assessment. This service is offered through the NHS and is free.

This means for instance should you decide the waiting time for your ADHD or ASD assessment is too long you can choose an alternative provider to suit you. There are a number of clinics throughout the UK that can offer right to choose ADHD or ASD assessments.

It is important to note that many of the clinics that offer Right to choose can offer a diagnosis but are rarely able to offer medication titration so if this is something you are seeking please make sure to ensure this is something the provider of your choice can offer or this means that you may be able to obtain a diagnosis but you will need a local NHS referral should you decide you wish to commence medication. Please take into consideration GP’s cannot initiate medication of ADHD or ASD it is a specialist only initiation and will require monitoring by a specialist before a GP can take over prescribing.

How to start the process:

Book an appointment with your GP to discuss the possibility of you having ADHD or ASD who may then recommend a referral for an assessment and possible diagnosis. You can be referred under the NHS or if you choose to go through the Right to choose process you will need to research and select a clinic yourselves (it is not something the GP can advise on).

Once you have chosen which clinic you would like to have your assessment with and filled out the relevant forms they require please pass this on to the GP surgery whom will then send this to your chosen clinic.

Please see a list below of some clinics that offer the Right to choose pathway and support/information links for whilst you are waiting for a diagnosis:

Appointment types we offer

  • Routine -  A new, ongoing or non-urgent issue (waiting time is normally 2-4 weeks)
  • On Day -  Appointments that are released on day every day
  • 1 month pre-bookable appointments
  • 1 week pre-bookable appointments (dependent on availability)
  • High priority - infections of any kind, children under 5,  palliative patients, extremely frail or elderly, suspected cancer, new lumps and bumps.
  • We offer both face to face and telephone appointments

If you have any symptoms of flu (a new or persistent cough, fever or loss of taste or smell) we will arrange a telephone call for you. If you have hearing difficulties or are deaf, please let us know and will agree the best course of action.

    Telephone calls/ telephone service:

We have installed a new telephone system to help us provide the best service possible. As part of these changes all calls (in and out of the surgery are now recorded for training and monitoring purposes and to assist with complaint investigations).

    Health partners

Through our partnership with Brighton and Hove Federation, patients now have access to additional appointments from 18.30 to 20.00 most weekdays and 09.00 to 17.00 Saturday and Sunday.  These include remote and face to face GP appointments as well as appointments with a nurse, pharmacist or health care assistant.  Specialist clinics are also being planned (e.g. menopause).  Please refer to the Federations website https://www.brightonandhovefed.co.uk/enhanced-access for updates.  Access to these clinics is by contacting the surgery in the normal way.   These appointments might be held at a different location to the surgery and are subject to availability.

    National capacity and appointment pressures:

Most GP surgeries up and down the country are currently reporting a very high level of demand, we are also finding this to be the case.

The NHS is facing unprecedented demand, with hospital waiting times being much longer than in the past patients are asking to see their GP much more frequently whilst waiting for hospital assessments.

We are doing everything we can to provide a safe and effective service to our patients.  We need to prioritise those most in need (such as young babies and extremely frail patients) and GPs are helping to make decisions regarding the priority of requests. You may need to wait longer than usual for an appointment or telephone call.

We ask that you are patient with us and work with reception staff so that we can find the right appointment and staff member to assist you or sign post you to the most appropriate support.

Please be kind and respectful to all staff. 75% of GP Surgeries are experiencing daily abuse from patients please find more info here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAM3fSDq9kA

We have a zero-tolerance stance to abuse of any kind directed at any staff members (this includes verbal abuse, swearing, shouting or intimidation of any kind). You will be asked to register with another GP practice if you cannot abide to these terms.

Online Contact 8:00-18:30 (Monday to Friday)

*Please note our online platform is not suitable for high priority items -  instead please call 01273 688333 or visit the practice to ensure we have full details and can pass the correct information onto clinicians to assist you*
