Training Practice

Parklands Surgery is proud to be an accredited Training Practice, having achieved this status in 2024.  This means we train GP Speciality Trainee (GPST) doctors in conjunction with Health Education England (HEE).

A GPST is a fully qualified, GMC registered doctor who has chosen to pursue a career in General Practice.  They will have at least two years’ experience in a hospital setting prior to entering the training programme. 

Dr Fatima Shamim is the Educational Supervisor who will support the GP trainees in their role, conducting daily review and assessment of their progress.

Patients may be given an appointment with one of our GP trainees, who will consult under the supervision of Dr Shamim. 

As part of their training, for educational purposes, our GP trainees are required to record some consultations by video. Our patients’ consultations will only be recorded with their express written permission. At the end of the consultation the patient will be asked if they are happy for the consultation recording to be kept and used for learning purposes. Patients can withdraw their consent at any time and confidentiality will always be strictly maintained. There is no obligation for a patient to agree to a consultation being recorded and this will not affect care in any way if a patient does not wish to participate. 

The trainees will also require some feedback from patients as part of their training and ongoing professional appraisal and we would greatly appreciate our patients participating in this if they are asked to do so.

We hope our patients will welcome and encourage the GP trainee to our practice. There is a national shortage of Doctors working in General Practice and this is a positive process for the GPST, the practice, the NHS and most importantly our patients.

RIGHT TO CHOOSE REFERRALS

At Parklands Surgery, we are committed to using NHS resources appropriately while ensuring patient safety, equity, and quality care. Please be aware that the NHS advises against combining private and NHS care for the same condition. Medications prescribed by a private provider must be managed by them.

If you pursue a private pathway for ADHD/ASD, you will need to obtain your medication from the private specialist. Alternatively, you may choose to be referred to the NHS team for review and medication management based on your diagnostic report.

Our surgery does not enter into shared care agreements with private providers. This avoids assuming responsibility for treatments outside of the NHS framework. Patients prescribed medications by a private provider must obtain private prescriptions for the entire treatment course. Should you wish to transfer from private to NHS care, a full transfer of responsibility, including prescribing, must occur.

Please ensure you understand the costs of private care and facilitate communication between your private provider and Parklands Surgery. Additionally, verify the qualifications of any private providers involved in your care.

While waiting times to see a consultant on the NHS can sometimes be lengthy, this ensures you receive a comprehensive treatment plan. You will be seen by a specialist, prescribed medication, and carefully monitored until your condition stabilises. Your care will then be transferred to your GP, who, as an NHS provider, will continue to manage your ongoing treatment under a shared care protocol.

NHS shared care means that your consultant and GP will collaborate to ensure consistent and effective management of your treatment. The consultant will continue to oversee certain aspects of your care, while your GP will take on the day-to-day management, offering continuity and support.

WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATIONS

For information, we are unable to prescribe medications such as Ozempic or Mounjaro for weight loss purposes unless the patient has type 2 diabetes and a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 27 with relevant obesity-related health conditions, such as metabolic syndrome or cardiovascular disease, on an individualised basis.

Notice: Sick (fit) notes for Examination and School Children

Please note that Parklands Surgery does not provide examinations and sickness certificates for school Children.

Please See Guidance Below from the British Medical Association:

It should be noted that GPs do not provide sick notes for schoolchildren. 

When children are absent from school owing to illness, schools may request a letter from a parent or guardian, and this is no different during an exam period.

However, children who have missed exams due to illness are frequently told by schools that a note from a doctor is required; but this cannot be provided by a GP. 

Aside from the fact that parents/guardians are responsible for excusing their children from school, GPs cannot provide retrospective sickness certification.

When a child suffers from a long-term condition, any certification will be provided by the responsible specialist.

GPC has sought and received confirmation from the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator that Awarding Organisations make no requirement for pupils to obtain a medical certificate in support of their application for special consideration. 

Students are asked for information in support of their application, but this may take the form of a statement by the school. 

The Joint Council for Qualifications has confirmed that as far as they are concerned, if a student was absent from an examination as a result of illness and has the support of the school or centre to be absent, special consideration will be granted on that basis.

 Awarding organisations do not insist that medical proof is provided.

CHAPERONES

All Patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation, examination or procedure where they consider one is required. The chaperone may be a family member or friend but on occasions a formal chaperone may be preferred.

If possible, patients are advised to ask for a chaperone, if one is required, at the time of booking an appointment so that arrangements can be made and the appointment is not delayed in any way. Alternatively, please ask our reception team on arrival.  The Healthcare Professional may also require a chaperone present for certain consultations.

 Our Patient Forum holds meetings on a quarterly basis. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th June 2025 and will be held at Parklands Surgery.
