General Practitioners (GPs) are the first point of contact for most people seeking medical attention in Scotland. Patients can expect to receive a wide range of services from their GP surgery, including diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, health advice, and referrals to specialists if necessary. GPs have a clear role as expert medical generalists. This role builds on the core strengths and values of general practice - expertise in holistic, person-centred care - and involves a focus on undifferentiated presentation, complex care, and whole system quality improvement and leadership

Overall, patients can expect high-quality care from their GP surgery in Scotland. General Practice surgeries in Scotland are under significant pressure due to the rising demand for healthcare services and the shortage of GPs . Patients can help alleviate this pressure by taking advantage of other clinicians who can provide similar services. Here are some examples:

· Pharmacists: Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who specialise in the safe use of medicines and health. They can provide advice on minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, and flu, and can also help manage long-term conditions, such as asthma and diabetes . Patients can visit their local pharmacy for advice on medication or to get a prescription filled.

· Opticians: Optometrists are healthcare professionals who specialise in eye care. They can help detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases, or abnormalities, and problems with general health . Patients can visit their local optician for an eye test or to get advice on eye health.

· Physiotherapists: Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. They can help patients improve their mobility and regain their independence after an injury or operation, or as a result of aging or a disability . Patients can visit their local physiotherapist for advice on exercise or to get treatment for an injury.

· Mental Health Professionals: Mental health professionals are healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment of mental health conditions. They can help patients overcome stress, emotional and relationship problems, or troublesome habits. Patients can visit their local mental health professional for advice on mental health or to get treatment for a mental health condition.

By taking advantage of these other clinicians, patients can help reduce the pressure on General Practice surgeries in Scotland while still receiving high-quality healthcare services.
